After studying Old City Cemetery and St. John’s Episcopal Cemetery, 313 total gravestones were selected for this project due to possessing date of death, legibility, and intactness of the stone itself. Out of the 313, only 190 gravestones had information inscribed beyond the typical biographical information, such as name, date of birth and/or death, and birthplaces. Three major divisions appeared when examining the epitaphs: roles and/or relationships, bible quotes, and prose and/or poetry.
